Rental Scam warning
Unfortunately the rental industry is full of scammers and due to the quality of our ads, our listings are a common target. Here is how you can make sure to protect yourself and spot a scammer. Scammers will typically copy our photos and relist the ad at a significantly lower price than the market average. An unbelievably low price is a red flag.
They will often use the property owner's name that is listed in public records as well. They will sometimes send some sort of "application" by email and then often ask you to wire funds after you have been "approved". Being asked to wire funds is a red flag. Most professional companies will use a traceable ACH transfer system such as ours.
Another key thing to look out for is the domain name of an email address. If the domain name is a generic provider such as "@gmail.com" or "@hotmail.com" that is a red flag. Look for a custom domain name that links to a real website such as @tenant-connection.com. Many properties are rented by private owners who will have such generic email addresses and are still legitimate, but it's always safer to rent from a professional management company. Renting from a professional company also gives you verifiable rental history which can really help out when renting/buying in the future. Our own application process gives much more weight to rental history from a professonal company. As a final warning, being able to talk to someone on the phone does not guarantee authenticity. Even out of country scammers can reroute local numbers to international numbers.
How to report scams
If you find yourself the target of a rental scam, please report it to your local law enforcement agency, the FBI, and to the FTC. Contact the website where the ad was posted and let us know as well.
